Starfire Nubians

Purebred Nubian Senior Does
A few years ago we were working on an export and gathering bucks. We picked up twins that had different sires. A buck got loose and DNA proved the sires of each kid. I joked for years that this was going to be my new breeding program. The more I thought about how different those bucks were, the more it made sense to me. It's like using IVF without all the expense. A buck gives you kids from many different does. Does are a much slower process being stuck using one buck a year. Using more than one buck speeds up the diversity and pinpoints the better crosses. I've tried it several times and love the results so I've embraced this new Double Dipping breeding program! Many of the does will be bred to two or more sires. All kids will be DNA typed to determine sires.

When the opportunity to purchase some of the best of the Dancers Ridge does came up, we could not resist and bought them all. I have always loved and admired that herd and it was an easy decision. We finished most of the does and sent them back home except for Forsythia. Forsythia is one of my favorite goats of all time. We had her out to a couple of shows where she easily finished her championship going BOB each time the first year here. Forsythia just gets better and better with age. Our beautiful Forsythia placed 4th in the aged doe class at the 2016 Nationals. She really didn't look her best fretting all week and the poor ventilation in the barn but she is such a perfect doe, she still looked just stunning and placed right behind two Reserve National Champions and Pika, the 3 time National Champion.

Tilly was Grand Champion and Best Doe in Show at her first show as a kid. She freshened with the beautiful udder that we would expect from our strong doe line, but has some texture problems in her mammary making her foreudder look a little off. She is one of the first does to catch your eye when you walk in the milker pen and has the personality to go with it. She's our "Who's that doe!" We didn't think she would see much of the show ring but we took her as an extra to a three ring show and she finished her championship! Tilly placed 8th in the 5&6 year old class at Nationals with comments that she had one of the best mammaries in the class. She was bred to Clark.

Phae went to one show as a kid and was Grand Champion picking up her dry leg. She freshened with her mother's beautiful udder and finished quickly. Not only beautiful, but she milks! She just gets better and better with age. We took her out a couple times in 2018 and she was BOB every time and BIS twice including the MD State Fair with 198 senior does shown. I don't know what it is about these blonde does, but there is such elegance to them, from Phae right down to her granddaughter. Thiry may have something here!

Bella was brought into the herd last spring but had a really hard time adjusting. She hated our guard dog and everything about being in our herd. She had been dam raising and after just a few days of tangling over becoming a milk goat, she fell in love with us but still would not accept the dog. I swear that goat didn't eat or drink for two months. We considered taking her back to Thiry but she finally decided it is not so bad here and although the dog is not her BFF, she finally accepted the fact that she is part of life here. She has quickly made her way up the pecking order and has been filling out and looking better and better every day. She is still a bit of a fusser but looks very good. She placed Reserve Grand Champion in all three rings at her first show this year. That's Hedy's rear udder in the background! Second show, two Grand Champions and she finished her championship at the last show of the season so she will return to Dancers Ridge after she is bred.

Ananke freshened with a lovely udder with a very well attached, long smooth foreudder. First two tests as a yearling were 8.6 & 9.0 pounds and she is not disappointing us as a 2 year old with her first test 11.1. She finished her championship last summer making her our first 5th generation SGCH Starfire doe. She looks great this year but had a single buck kid and not milking like she did her first two freshenings.

Hedy is as correct as they come. Almost always with her head buried in the grain or hay, she carries a little extra fleshing but is still very dairy with wide open ribs and that beautiful depth of body we strive for in our herd. You just have to work a little to find those ribs! She was Grand Champion as chunky dry yearling. She continued to look better and better as the year went on, picking up a Reserve or two. This year when she freshened, we knew it was her year. At her first show she finished her championship. She has been bred to Clark and Darius.

Meli is a product of our double dipping. Her two sisters were sired by another buck and as different as night and day. Meli has a longer bone pattern and is sharper and more dairy than her sisters. She also happens to be the only doe kid from our purchase of Kryptonite, son to Pika the 3 time National Champion and a buck I will miss for some time to come. She freshened 10 days early and did not come into as much milk as the other yearlings but she has a dandy udder! I'm very excited about the yearlings this year and especially Meli. As excited as we were about her, she developed mastitis, has been treated and dried off to heal.

Nebula is another product of our double dipping. She and her sister Omarosa were sired by Bourbon and Meli by Kryptonite. Such different kids. Omarosa and Nebula were little tanks. They are wide and deep yet still have that dairy strength. Omarosa, the best of the three, is working and living out her life in Russia. At Nebula's first show as a kid she stood 2nd behind her half sister Phlavia in both rings and a large class of intermediate kids. She freshened with a very competitive udder, maybe ever better than her big sister Hedy. At her debut as a yearling milker she was twice Reserve Grand Champion picking up her first milking leg.

Phlavia is our fist daughter from Phae, blonde and beautiful like her dam and she knows it. She is just so elegant, she takes your breath away. At her first show as a kid she was Reserve Champion in the first ring and Grand Champion in the second. She freshened with a beautiful udder. She is a very large gangly yearling doe that needs to grow into that big frame of hers and she is doing just that as the winter sets in and her production drops. She looks more and more like her dam every day. She had a single doe kid that has that same elegant look.
